The International Focus Programme (IFP)

The International Focus Programme (IFP) was introduced in 1994 to provide the network with an opportunity to work together on a "hot legal topic". In the IFP framework Local and National Groups work together with ELSA International and legal institutions to build a concrete knowledge base and to organize events, such as seminars, conferences, legal research groups, debates, moot court competitions, lawyers at work (L@W) events, publications and traineeships, which will have an impact on legal education, society and the international community.

The current IFP topic is Health Law. It was selected at the ICM in Malta, in March 2010, and was implemented on August 1st, 2010 and will run until July 31st, 2013.

ELSA International organizes an annual essay competition on the current IFP topic, more information can be found on the competition website.

IFP Essay Competition

ELSA International is proud to present the IV IFP Essay Competition titled

  Right to Healthcare

The competition deadline is Monday Feb 27th 2012, 23:39 CET. Send your essay to essaycompetition@elsa.org.

Topic Description:The right to health care has been generally accepted as a fundamental human right, though merely a social right and therefore not legally enforceable in court. Nonetheless, some legal systems recognise the justiciability of the right to health. This has created opportunities to individual patients claiming healthcare access. How will healthcare claims affect health care systems?“

The best essays will be published on the website of the European Social Charter by the Council of Europe and on the website of the IFP Essay Competition.

The prizes of the competition will be provided by partners of ELSA:

Winner: Legal English course at the London School of English

Runner up: Summer School on Health Law and Ethics in the Erasmus Observatory on Health Law

2nd runner up: Free participation in the IFP Mid-Evaluation Conference in Trieste, Italy, April 16th - 22nd 2012

The three best submissions will all receive publications and merchandise from the Council of Europe. All participants will receive a certificate of participation.
