What is STEP?
STEP is a trainee exchange programme, which offers law firms and companies the possibility to employ a trainee from a foreign jurisdiction. Applicants for the traineeships offered can be found from most jurisdictions in Europe and also from jurisdictions outside Europe as a result of ELSA's co-operation with other students' organisations.
During its 25 year existence STEP has grown from the exchange of a handful of traineeships in the first years to around 450 traineeships and approximately 2000 applicants during the last years. With the introduction of ELSA ONLINE, the online matching system, in 2001 there are no longer any administrative limits to the programme and ELSA is thus foreseeing further growth of STEP.
The employers taking part in STEP comprise of law firms, courts, public institutions, banks, in-house legal departments, consulting firms and international organisations.
The duration of the traineeship varies from a couple of weeks to several months and it may take place during any time of the year.

The Benefits
It has become increasingly important for lawyers in Europe to be aware of all developments within other European legal systems and to be prepared to deal with possible challenges. Participation in STEP is a very simple yet effective way for firms, companies or institutions to broaden horizons and establish valuable contacts with lawyers to be. Furthermore, the employer reaps benefits from the experience and knowledge the foreign trainee brings from his or her own legal system or jurisdiction.
When taking part in STEP the employer is provided with a small selection of suitably qualified students or young lawyers from which to make a choice. Whether special knowledge of a particular field of law is required, or translation of legal documents, ELSA can provide a trainee to meet the employer's needs. There is a possibility to create the qualification profile that the trainee must possess. The employer sets the requirements regarding language skills, academic background and level of studies.
Because of the new online matching system you are guaranteed to receive, in addition to very motivated law students, applications from only qualified students.

How to Proceed
If your company would like to take part in STEP you may either contact the ELSA group in the closest law faculty or ELSA International, who will put you in contact with the ELSA group closest to you. This local group of ELSA will thereafter provide you with the Trainee Specification Form in which you set out the required qualifications.
From the moment the Trainee Specification Form is filled in by the employer, ELSA takes care of the rest. The local ELSA group arranges accommodation for the student, as well as a visa, tax and other formal matters.
